LG X3 May be Android 4.0 Flagship Model

Written By Sam on Saturday, January 21, 2012 | 1:38 AM

Just days after announcing its first 4G LTE Android tablet, the Optimus Pad LTE, details have emerged for a high-end smartphone.

Based on the rumored specifications, LG may be ready to unveil a flagship Android 4.0 handset next month at Mobile World Congress.

According to information obtained by Pocketnow, the LG X3 should boast a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, a massive 1,280x720-pixel 4.7-inch display, and an 8-megapixel camera. Additionally it should have a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, 16GB storage, Bluetooth 4.0, HSPA+ connectivity, NFC, and a 2,000mAh battery. That's not too shabby for a phone with an alleged sub-9mm (0.35-inch) profile.

Even if LG announces the handset at Mobile World Congress we may be a few months away from seeing it touch down in the United States. Indeed, LG has a habit of releasing the same model across various regions, often giving other countries a slight head start. For now, Pocketnow predicts a late spring or early summer release date, possibly with LTE connectivity.

I'm becoming a bigger fan of LG's moves lately, what with the Nitro HD, Spectrum, and Viper. As many Android users begin to consider new devices, LG is poised to steal away a bit of Samsung and HTC's market.

New Sony Xperia Ion

Written By Sam on Monday, January 9, 2012 | 11:05 PM

Sony plans to introduce its first Sony-branded phone on AT&T’s LTE network this year, the company announced at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 9. The Xperia Ion has impressive specs and a beautiful screen, though it wasn’t a perfect experience in our hands.

The Xperia Ion has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 16GB of internal storage behind a gorgeous 1280x720 display. Only a few companies have managed to eschew the lesser PenTile displays, but with the force of the Bravia brand behind Sony’s phones (the Sony Ericsson brand in the photos is just an anachronism, we’re told) , we expect they’ll lead the charge for high-quality screens. How the battery life will be on those phones is another matter.

The Xperia Ion felt light and not too big in hand for it’s 4.6-inch screen size—in fact, we barely noticed its large size, despite usually balking at phones of similar girth. The edges weren’t very comfortable to hold, but the rounded back may do better work in that area.

The sleep and volume buttons on the sides had nice give, but the navigation buttons along the bottom of the screen were very under-responsive. Those soft buttons are stylized with an underscoring light, and we seemed to have better luck tapping at the light than the icon itself—a little misleading given the history of how Android buttons are used, but we would learn. If that was the correct way.

50,000 Apps for Windows Phone

Written By Sam on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 | 4:38 AM

Sure it may not have passed the half-million mark like Apple's App Store, but http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifWindows Phone's digital download platform has reached a nice new milestone.

A report from Allaboutwindowsphone.com claims the number of Windows Phone apps has eclipsed 50,000. Keeping in mind that Microsoft's new mobile platform just launched last year, that's not too bad.

It took the iPhone about 12 months to reach the same milestone, so Windows Phone is only a couple months behind. Also, the report noted, "It took just over a year to get to 40,000 apps, but just 40 days to add the next 10,000 apps. That bodes well for Windows Phone in 2012."

The Microsoft platform has gained a substantial amount of new attention thanks to the maturing of its partnership with Nokia. The first Windows Phone-powered Nokia device will hit the US next month on T-Mobile, at a mass market-friendly price of $50 (after mail-in rebate).

Android Will Be Bigger in 2012

Written By Sam on Monday, December 26, 2011 | 9:05 PM

It looks like 2012 will be another eventful year for Android. Now that the latest OS version, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, has hit the market, several device makers are expected to release ICS handsets for a ready consumer market. LG is the latest to reveal its plans around ICS, kicking into high hear during the second quarter of next year. Among the first phones to get the upgrade are the Optimus 2X, which made waves as the world’s first dual-core smartphone earlier this year, and the Optimus LTE. Others in the Optimus lineup, including the 3D, Black and Big, will also receive the ICS update by Q3 of next year.

It seems like a long time to wait for ICS, but the roll out of Android’s latest edition has been a slow one. Fragmentation remains an issue with Android’s OS, and could continue to cause hiccups in 2012. PC Magazine highlights some of Android’s key developments throughout 2011, with fragmentation tripping up Honeycomb’s tablet capabilities and stalling Android’s rise in the tablet market. While Gingerbread is the top OS across Android smartphones, it’s ICS consumers want, and as usual, Android’s gotten ahead of itself when it comes to new product hype and the reality of mass access.

For new and “old” Android users

Nevertheless, many existing Android users, as well as newbies that received Android devices over the holiday weekend, will have to work with what they’ve got. ZDnet has a few suggestions on how to clean up your Android device and make it good as new, citing the end of the year as a prime opportunity to reset your phone. And whether you have an “older” Android or a new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, a few tips on preserving your device’s battery life never hurt.
